If your business has been online for more than a couple years, you’re probably aware of some new things being rolled out by Google. If not, here’s a quick 30,000 foot view:
The Panda algorithm was designed to eliminate low quality, shallow, spammy content from reaching Google’s search community and has been continuously developed to do just that, better and better.
The Penguin algorithm was designed to eliminate low quality, shallow, spammy pages from passing link authority to pages trying to manipulate the search engine and rank highly without significant merit.
Both of these algorithms have proven to be very effective for Google and even more of a headache for webmasters and marketing managers alike. There’s no simple solution to getting your website back in good standing, however, while it is time consuming, there is a path to follow.
The first thing you need to do if you think you have been hit by either of these penalties is to log in to your Google Webmaster Tools dashboard and see for yourself if there are any messages and/or manual penalties.
If you do have a manual penalty against your site, you’ll need to do everything below AND THEN SUBMIT A RECONSIDERATION REQUEST to Google. If you DO NOT have a manual penalty, you can follow the steps below to be proactive towards keeping your site safe from penalty and to recover your rankings naturally.
Once you’ve determined whether or not you have a manual penalty, your next step is to find out where your links are and to decide which ones are good, bad or suspicious. There are several companies out there with tools to do this, however the best way to do this is to hire a company that uses many tools to every link possible to ensure you’re not missing a few hundred links that could be the biggest part of your problem.
Once you’ve determined which links you’re keeping and which need to go, you will need to attempt to contact the webmasters of the sites with the bad links to have them removed. To be effective at this, it is essential you document every email, phone call, or web form submission to show proof of attempts made to Google in the next step.
After attempting to contact each suspicious site owner at least 3 times, it is time to prepare your disavow file and if your penalty is a manual one, your reconsideration request as well.
For your disavow file, you’ll need to create a .txt document specifying which domains and which pages you’d like to have disavowed by Google. You’ll need to include the URL where the link is, how many times you’ve attempted to contact the webmaster, and what the final result is from your efforts. If Google determines you’ve made every possible effort to have the link removed, they’ll disavow the link.
However, without proof of attempts to have the links removed, your disavow file and reconsideration request will not achieve any results.
Once you’ve submitted your disavow and/or reconsideration request, your site is back in the hands of Google and within a week or two, you’ll be informed as to whether your penalty has been removed or reduced.
